Automatic Sprinkler Systems: What They Are and How They Work

Automatic sprinklers or sprinklers are one of the best-known fire protection systems, since it is one of the oldest, which performs the functions of fire detection and extinction.

Automatic sprinkler systems are also one of the most popular fire extinguishing systems since, in addition to the above, they are silent, they are always alert to react and they do not need anyone to intervene to start them up. For something, automatic sprinkler systems are considered the most efficient method to prevent the spread of fires and save lives. Automatic sprinklers make it possible to detect a start of fire and put it out with water or control it for a while another more efficient system is put into operation.

One of the reasons why this system is so well-known and popular is because automatic sprinklers protect practically all properties, except when water is not recommended as an extinguishing agent and other systems must be used. Another of its advantages is that, since automatic sprinklers do not require another system to activate them, they are completely independent.

Automatic sprinklers are devices that are activated against an increase in ambient temperature and expel the water that comes through the pipes and acts as an extinguishing agent, to extinguish the fire or prevent its spread.

Standard establishes the requirements for the design and installation of automatic sprinklers:

• The maximum coverage area of a sprinkler shall not exceed 37.10 m2.
• The maximum distance from the sprinklers to the wall must not be more than half the maximum distance between sprinklers.
• The minimum distance from the sprinklers to the wall must not be less than 102 mm.
• The minimum separation between sprinklers must not be less than 2.44 meters.

Materials and equipment used to complete a fire sprinkler system in Mumbai

• Cabinets with hoses, reel, valve and nozzle lance, axe and fire extinguisher
• Sprinklers, automatic sprinklers or sprinklers
• Siamese twins or fire sockets
• Pipeline
• Bombs
• Electric part
• Alarm panel for detection

There are different types of sprinklers, among them are the uprights or pendants.

According to the characteristics of each one, the thermal sensitivity, the activation temperature, the hole diameter, the installation orientation and the characteristics of the water distribution will vary.
SafetyMax Mumbai has a business unit specialized in Engineering and Works, which projects, designs, installs, modifies and do maintenance service of automatic sprinkler systems and performs maintenance on each system.

Proven effectiveness

Did you know that 98% of fires that occur in places where automatic sprinklers are installed are controlled from the start without any type of human intervention and without causing considerable damage? In addition to controlling the fire at its inception, automatic sprinklers also send an alarm that reaches the fire brigade, which also makes their job easier and prevents the fire from spreading if the sprinklers have failed to extinguish it.

How automatic sprinklers work

The most popular automatic sprinkler systems are pipe sprinklers. In these systems, the automatic sprinklers are water discharge nozzles that are connected to a pressurized hydraulic network. When the nozzles detect a rise in temperature, they detach a part of its body, allowing it to release pressurized water in sufficient quantity to wet a certain area. That is, the sprinkler is in the first instance a fire detector that is activated by heat. In turn, it is a fire extinguisher that uses pressurized water.

These sprinklers can be pressurized with water, called wet-pipe systems, or with air, known as dry-pipe systems. This last system is the one used in areas where temperatures drop a lot to prevent the water from freezing in the pipes.

If the fire is so intense that the heat is not reduced within a few seconds (ie. the sprinkler is unable to put out the fire) the system activates another sprinkler, and so on, until all sprinklers are activated.

In addition to extinguishing or controlling the source of the fire, this type of sprinkler also fulfills another important function: cooling the area. This makes it possible to protect important structures to prevent materials such as wood or iron from deforming, which avoids or, at least, minimizes the need for subsequent reform.

In addition to wet automatic sprinkler systems, there are other types of sprinklers. One of these systems is the precaution sprinkler system, the piping of which is not pressurized. When this system detects the rise in temperature, it sends a signal to a valve that contains the water under pressure, giving rise to the release of the water, which runs through the pipes to discharge the water through the nozzles. This system makes it possible to prevent accidental water discharge that could damage important elements, making it very suitable for museums, clean rooms in laboratories or places where there are furniture or valuable belongings.

Another is the deluge sprinkler system, which uses open sprinklers without a thermo sensitive element interconnected to a fire detection system, so that when the detection system is activated, an opening signal is sent to the valve containing the water, under pressure and water flows through all sprinklers.
