Since the purpose of this maintenance is to be able to offer maximum safety and proper functioning of the extinguishers, said extinguisher maintenance plan must consist of a very complete examination and the consequent repair of any defect found, as well as, in being equipped with those spare parts that are needed.

The maintenance of a portable fire extinguisher encompasses various processes that we must know to know how often we have to carry out maintenance on a fire extinguisher.

These technical specifications are intended to set the minimum requirements with which the maintenance service of fire extinguishers must be carried out.

The responsibility for application and scope of maintenance falls on all personnel (operators / workers) regardless of any product or raw material involved in the manufacture of fire extinguishers.

The personnel who use said equipment is responsible for verifying that they comply with the requirements established in the regulations for the operations that they are going to carry out with it and for demanding both the manufacturer and the technical manager of their certificate if necessary. Definitions

A fire extinguisher is an autonomous device that allows projecting and directing an extinguishing agent on a fire in order to extinguish it in its initial phase. The projection of the extinguishing agent is achieved through the action of an internal pressure, which can be obtained by permanent internal pressurization or by the release of an auxiliary gas. It consists of:

Container or body: It is the element that contains the extinguishing agent, and also contains the driving gas. In other cases, the pressure can be attached or the extinguishing agent can be the same propellant gas (CO2).

Extinguishing agent: is the product contained in the extinguishing agent whose action causes extinction. The most common extinguishing agents are water, chemical powder and CO2.

Propelling agent or pressurization system: It is the means used to ensure that the extinguishing agent can be projected.

Trigger elements: They allow starting, directing and stopping the projection of the extinguishing agent. We distinguish the actuation valve composed of two handles, the one below that is fixed and the one above that is the actuation one.

Hose or Discharge Tube: It is a semi-rigid tube through which the extinguishing agent circulates to the outside.

Nozzle: It is the part located at the end of the hose (or directly attached to the extinguisher in extinguishers that do not have a hose). Depending on the type of extinguishing agent, different nozzles are used, in order to facilitate their dispersion and enhance their penetrating power in the fire to which they are directed.

Safety devices: They are the safety pin, which prevents involuntary activation of the handle, and the pressure gauge, which indicates the pressure of the driving gas.

How often do we have to perform maintenance on a fire extinguisher?
Maintenance of fire extinguishers Requirements for proper maintenance

Once a month
• Shake the extinguisher so that the dust inside does not settle, by shaking it up and down, for at least two minutes.
• Carrying out an inspection of the fire extinguisher, to ensure that it is charged and available will be carried out.

Every three months
• Check the state of conservation in which the fire extinguisher is found.
• Verify some elements such as the insurance, the inscriptions, the security seals or the hose.
• Check that there is easy access to the extinguisher.
• Check weight and pressure.
• Check the condition of all mechanical parts.

Every 12 months
• Check the weight and pressure of the extinguisher.
• Check the state of the extinguisher agent.
• Check the condition of the hose.
• Examine the state of the valves, nozzles and other mechanical parts.

Every 5 years
• Carrying out a hydraulic test, which will take place a maximum of 3 times, since the useful life of any fire extinguisher is 20 years.
